Soweto South Africa

Soweto Tour

A snapshot of South’s Africa’s past, present and future

Nowhere is more synonymous with South Africa’s past struggles than Soweto township.

Nowadays, a Soweto tour reveals an eclectic melting pot of cultures and a population with their own proud identity.

Soweto township is keen to emerge from its past associations but careful to never forget its pivotal  role in the formation of modern South Africa.

A tour of Soweto will touch on both the past and the present. You will visit Nelson Mandela’s former home as well as the Hector Pieterson Museum. The latter is a touching memorial to some of the younger victims of the anti-apartheid uprisings.

You will visit shebeens, once illicit drinking establishments and secretive meeting places for activists. Now they serve up stories and local specialities such as vetkoek, a fried bread staple meal, popular across much of South Africa.

The mode of transport for your Soweto tour can take many forms. By car, bike, on foot or even aboard a quad bike or tuk tuk, you’ll discover less visited corners of this endlessly surprising community.

You can enjoy Soweto at any time of year although it’s worth bringing a raincoat between November and March.

With so much to see, itineraries can also be tailored to guests of all ages. Bright, bustling and educational, a Soweto tour would be a particularly memorable start or conclusion to a South Africa family holiday.
