Where is Cape Town?
Cape Town lies in the south-western corner of mainland Africa, near the Cape of Good Hope, the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The city nestles in the shadow of iconic Table Mountain, overlooking the natural harbour of Table Bay.
South Africa’s first city has numerous international and domestic air links. Regional connections exist with Victoria Falls, Botswana and the Kruger National Park. So the city can be easily combined with a luxury family safari.
What to do on Cape Town holidays?
How much is there to do in Cape Town? How long is a piece of kelp?
Cape Town holidays offer stunning hotels, outdoor adventure, local wildlife and fascinating history to name but a few. The city is also blessed with exceptional museums and galleries, and a bouncing social scene.
Travelling with children? We recommend South Africa family holidays should always include a few days in Cape Town.
Boat trips out to Robben Island, the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and exploring the V&A waterfront are all firm family favourites.
The African penguins at Boulders Beach also never fail to charm as they waddle ashore. Their terrestrial ungainliness, a marked contrast to their effortless navigation of the thirty-metre-high kelp forests offshore.
Best time to visit?
Cape Town’s summer months of November through to March see the city basking in warm, settled conditions. The coastal breeze moderates the temperature so getting out and about remains comfortable.
June to September can bring cooler temperatures, wind, and rain – remember the reputation of the Cape of Good Hope! During this period wind sensitive activities (boat trips and the Table Mountain cable car) can’t always be guaranteed.
However, in these months you also avoid the heat if you decide to include a South Africa family safari in the Kruger or Madikwe.
Where to stay?
Like Vasco de Gama trying to navigate the Cape of Good Hope, choosing from Cape Town’s many world-class hotels can be a daunting prospect.
The City Bowl and Victoria and Alfred Waterfront both offer a fantastic selection to suit all tastes. Equally so the chain of sandy bays that extends to the south of the city.
Who should visit?
There really is something for everyone here.
Whatever your age, interests or reasons for visiting the gateway to Africa, Cape Town holidays tick every box imaginable.
Cape Town is the perfect beginning or end point to a South Africa family holiday.
