Read our advice on the best time to visit the Maldives for a luxury family holiday
There is no such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives
With warm temperatures all year round, you can have an incredible experience in the Maldives no matter the time of year. The best weather is typically from January to March, offering warm temperatures and clear skies ideal for beach lounging and water activities. For budget travelers, April to August provides cheaper rates despite occasional rain. Wildlife enthusiasts will find October and November perfect for spotting manta rays and whale sharks, while December brings festive celebrations with plenty of sun.
November - April
The Maldives at its best
Visiting the Maldives between November and April ensures you experience the islands at their best. January to March is particularly ideal, with warm temperatures, low humidity, and plenty of sunshine—perfect for lounging on the pristine beaches. This period falls outside the monsoon season, offering clear skies and calm waters, making it the prime time for snorkeling and diving. The water visibility is exceptional, especially in atolls like the Raa Atoll, renowned for its rich marine life and stunning coral formations.
Late November to December sees the end of the monsoon, with a slight increase in prices due to the high demand for winter sun holidays. However, the serene weather and festive atmosphere make it worthwhile. Expect average temperatures around 29°C (84°F) and up to nine hours of sunshine daily, providing ideal conditions for both relaxation and adventure.
April - August
A Bargain getaway to the Maldives
Visiting the Maldives between April and August is perfect for budget-conscious travelers. This period, marked by the onset of the first showers, offers some of the most affordable rates for flights and resorts. Despite the occasional rain, you can still expect seven to eight hours of sunshine daily.
While water visibility for snorkeling and diving might be reduced, the warm sea temperatures around 30°C (86°F) make for enjoyable swims. Resorts are less crowded, making it easier to find a perfect spot to enjoy stunning sunset views and increasing the likelihood of complimentary room upgrades.
This season also features a wide range of indoor activities such as cookery masterclasses and art workshops. For example, Cora Cora on Raa Atoll offers art classes with a local artist, providing a unique cultural experience that goes beyond the beautiful beaches.
