South Luangwa National Park was first founded as a protected game reserve in 1904 yet has remained untouched by the mass tourism of more well known parks.
Often referred to as Africa’s last great wilderness, the South Luangwa National Park lies in a fertile valley that supports an abundance of big game and is a must-see destination on a Zambia family safari looking to escape the crowds.
South Luangwa National Park is the pride of Zambian safari. Home to four of the Big Five, the park is principally known for its predator populations, including lion, leopard and the critically endangered African wild dog.

Day 1 Day 2-3 Day 3-5
Tafika Camp is a traditional owner-run safari camp located on the unexplored eastern side of the Luangwa River.
A family safari at Tafika offers exceptional game-viewing, some of Zambia’s best guides and exciting activities such as mountain bike safaris, walking safaris, visits to the local Mkasanga Village and microlighting in May.
The owners John and Carol Coppinger have lived at the camp for over 20 years, raising their own children here, and as a result the camp has an informal family-friendly feel. The 6 reed and thatch chalets are positioned along the Luangwa River and there is a spacious two-bedroom family chalet for those with younger children. The main camp is set around a waterhole which is frequented by herds of elephant, bushbuck, and several bird species, and guests can view these upclose from two nearby hides.
Day 1 Day 2-3 Day 3-5Big Lagoon Camp is an exceptional choice for families seeking a unique and luxurious Zambia safari. Located in the South Luangwa National Park, this intimate camp features just three spacious reed-and-thatch chalets, ensuring privacy and an exclusive experience. Overlooking a permanent lagoon that attracts wildlife year-round, families can witness animals gathering right from camp.
What makes Big Lagoon particularly special for families is its focus on walking safaris. Led by expert guides, these safaris offer a chance to explore the bush on foot, observing wildlife up close while learning about animal tracking and the environment in a safe and engaging way. It’s a fantastic opportunity for children to connect with nature and enjoy a more immersive safari experience.
The camp’s relaxed atmosphere, combined with personal service, makes it ideal for families who want both adventure and comfort. Between walks, the waterfront deck provides the perfect spot to relax, with incredible views of the surrounding wildlife. Meals are enjoyed together under the shade of trees, and the smaller size of the camp means more personalised attention from the staff.
Day 1 Day 2-3 Day 3-5Chikoko Tree Camp in South Luangwa National Park offers families a truly unique and immersive safari experience in a game-rich area of pristine bush.
The camp’s treehouse-style chalets, raised into the canopy, provide stunning views of the surrounding acacia groves and the wildlife that frequents the area. The upstairs bedrooms are complemented by outdoor safari showers downstairs, where families can stargaze while surrounded by nature.
Accessible only by foot, Chikoko offers unparalleled walking safaris, allowing families to explore the African bush up close. Led by experienced guides, these safaris immerse guests in the untamed wilderness, with opportunities to track lions, observe towering giraffes, and get close to elephants.
Children will love learning about the small creatures that call the bush home, while parents can appreciate the thrill of walking through a predator-rich area. Without the presence of vehicles or roads, families can truly feel like they’ve stepped into a hidden world where wildlife and nature take centre stage.
Chikoko Tree Camp offers a one-of-a-kind safari experience that brings families closer to nature in a way few camps can match.
