The Lower Zambezi National Park, nestled along the northwestern bank of the Zambezi River, is a hidden gem of Zambia safari holidays.

Once the private retreat of Zambia’s president, this 4,092-square-kilometre park became public in 1983 and remains one of Africa’s most unspoiled wilderness areas. With some sections designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the park is famed for its dense wildlife populations, where elephants, lions, and leopards roam in strong numbers.

The Zambezi River has sculpted this landscape over centuries, enriching the area with mineral-rich volcanic soils which feed lush forests and attract an abundance of game. Families on a Zambia family safari can experience thrilling boat safaris, guided walking tours, or canoeing trips that bring you up close to hippos, Nile crocodiles, and some of the park’s nearly 400 species of bird

Whether exploring by land or water, the Lower Zambezi offers a remote adventure undisturbed by other safari-goers, ensuring an unforgettable family safari.

Where is the Lower Zambezi National Park?

The Lower Zambezi National Park, located roughly 150 km east of Lusaka, is a remote gem on any Zambia safari holiday.

Bordered by a dramatic escarpment to the North and Zimbabwe to the south, the park is surrounded by a vast game management area, allowing wildlife to roam freely and follow natural migration patterns.

Accessible only by boat or light aircraft via the Jeki or Royal airstrips, its isolated location ensures a more exclusive experience, perfect for a Zambia family safari with fewer tourists and unspoiled wilderness.

What to do in the Lower Zambezi National Park?

With no paved roads, few other tourists and a remote location, the Lower Zambezi National Park offers an exhilarating destination on a Zambia family safari.

The Zambezi River is the epicentre of Zambian boat and canoeing safaris. The park’s wildlife is almost totally concentrated in the river valley, thanks to the Northern escarpment acting as a natural barrier to animals and there being few other permanent water sources in the park. The river’s gentle flow is ideal for guided canoeing tours, offering sightings of huge pods of hippo, Nile crocodiles and even elephant and buffalo swimming between the Zambezi’s rocky islands.

Back on land, game drives through the river valley can be an equally enriching experience. Home to four of the Big Five, the Lower Zambezi is renowned for its strong predator sightings, including leopard, large prides of lion and wild dogs that first reappeared here in 2015. While giraffes are notably absent due to the hilly landscape, night drives to spot the nocturnal porcupine, hyena and honey badger will more than make up for it.

The Lower Zambezi is an essential destination for anyone even mildly interested in fishing with many lodges offering trips to try and snag the infamous Tiger Fish.

The sheer range of activities on offer in the game-rich Lower Zambezi makes it an exciting stop-off on any Zambia safari holiday.

Best time to visit?

The best time to visit the Lower Zambezi National Park for a safari holiday is during the dry season, from July to October.

This period offers the best game-viewing, as wildlife concentrates around the Zambezi River’s banks and the cooler mornings and sunny days are perfect for exploring the park. The dry weather also ensures visibility is high, making it ideal for spotting elephants, lions, and leopards in their natural habitat.

For keen anglers, fishing is at its prime between September and November, when Tiger Fish and other species are abundant. Whilst this time of year can see some very high temperatures, families can also benefit from cheaper rates and more availability.
