Zambia - the Birthplace of the Walking Safari
Walking safaris are an exhilarating addition to any African family adventure, and there’s no better place to experience them than in Zambia, widely recognized as their birthplace. Pioneered by conservationist Norman Carr in the 1960s, the first African walking safaris took place in South Luangwa National Park. Carr encouraged these immersive bush walks as a way to experience big game up close while fostering awareness of environmental conservation.
Led by expertly trained guides, walking safaris allow families to discover the smaller wonders of the bush that are often overlooked on vehicle-based game drives. Being on foot enables you to identify and track giraffes and elephants and appreciate the plethora of birdlife flitting above.
Given the adventurous nature of exploring the bush on foot, most national parks limit walking safaris to children aged 12 or older.
