Birdwatchers are in for a treat, with over 400 bird species making the wetlands a paradise for enthusiasts. Walking safaris across the sprawling floodplains offer a thrilling way to spot the prehistoric shoebill as well as the rare wattled crane. A visit to the wetlands also provides a chance to witness large numbers of the endangered black lechwe antelope grazing freely in the grasslands.

Cultural visits to Kopano Village and seasonal fishing villages introduce families to the traditional lifestyle of the Bemba and Bisa tribes, who live harmoniously with the land. Best time to visit?

The dry season, spanning from May to October, is ideal for family safaris in Bangweulu. From May to July, as the water levels recede, wildlife is more concentrated around the wetlands’ remaining water sources. Spot large gatherings of the rare black lechwe and see the elusive shoebill on mokoro excursions along the remaining waterways.

For birdwatchers, the peak wet season from December to March transforms the Bangweulu Wetlands into a lively birding haven with an abundance of migratory and resident species. During this time, flocks of waterbirds, such as herons, egrets, and the striking African spoonbill, gather in vast numbers. The wetlands become particularly scenic, though accessibility can be tricky due to high water levels. November offers a balanced alternative with slightly drier conditions yet plenty of bird activity.
