Matemwe Beach House

Matemwe beach itself is one of our favourites on the main island of Zanzibar – the sand is particularly white and very fine, the beach is wide and long, and the fishing village of Matemwe remains as traditional and welcoming as it has been for centuries.

As well as taking part in all manner of watersports, from Matemwe Beach House you can observe local fishermen at work – mending nets, hauling in the night’s catch, gutting fish, and you can also get to know the local families as they make use of the beach for playtime, kid’s football matches, catching up on the day’s news, or simply soaking up the island’s sunshine. This is Zanzibar at its authentic, relaxed best. Exploring the rock pools at low tide is not to be missed (sunhats and sunscreen are a must!).

Matemwe Beach House forms part of Matemwe Lodge, and as such a short walk across the beach provides access to the Lodge and all its facilities, such as the spa, and main restaurant, should you wish to leave your private bubble!
