Shumba Camp
An atmospheric seasonal camp in the wildlife-rich Busanga Plains
Shumba Camp
Shumba Camp is a spectacular tented camp set on its own little island in the midst of the Busanga Plains, overlooking miles of floodplains threaded with channels.
The endless plains are best compared to those of the Serengeti, making Shumba Camp a worthwhile and contrasting inclusion on a luxury family safari to Zambia. Just six tented suites are perched amidst the shade of fig trees on top of a rocky outcrop, enabling guests to observe the wilderness from every angle. A spacious family room sleeps up to four people, ideal for families with younger children.
The Busanga Plains, in the north of Kafue National Park, is one of Zambia’s best kept safari secrets. A raw and rugged landscape and remote location means that few tourists venture this far despite it being one of the best places to visit in Southern Africa if you want to see lions. Famous for its ‘flying lions’, who leap over the plains’ drying water channels, guests can also look forward to regular sightings of hyena, wild dog and cheetah on game drives as well as a ‘resident’ herd of rare roan antelope.
The camp offers exciting infrared-spotlit night drives to spot the genet, civet, owls and occasionally the elusive leopard. And early on in the season, the Busanga Plains are still largely covered by water allowing for exploration of the channels by boat.
Shumba Camp offers families exclusive access to one of Zambia’s most underrated safari destinations whilst still delivering a luxury experience.
