Nyungwe National Park, bordering the Congo and Burundi borders of southwestern Rwanda, is one of Eastern Africa’s hidden safari gems.

Designated as a national park in 2004, it protects one of Africa’s largest montane rainforests, spanning over 100,000 hectares of dense jungle, pristine streams, and secluded swamps.

Situated along the Albertine Rift, which extends through Uganda, the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania, Nyungwe ranges in altitude from 1,600 to 3,000 metres. This biodiversity hotspot is home to an extraordinary array of species, including over 13 primates, nearly 300 bird species, and even the remotest source of the Nile.

The park’s highlight is the chance to trek in search of over 60 chimpanzees that inhabit its lush forest. Easier and more affordable than mountain gorilla trekking, this activity is ideal for families with younger children or those simply wanting to encounter our closest living relatives with whom we share over 98% of our DNA. Other thrilling experiences include the canopy walk, which offers sweeping views of the rainforest canopy, guided birding safaris, and scenic picnics on tranquil hiking trails.

With limited lodges, Nyungwe promises an intimate and exclusive safari experience. One&Only Nyungwe House stands out with its luxurious treetop rooms, providing stunning views of the rainforest and glimpses of playful colobus monkeys swinging in the canopy.

Where is the Nyungwe National Park?

Located in the southeastern corner of Rwanda, the Nyungwe National Park offers spectacular views of Congo to the west and the Virunga Mountains to the north.

Spanning over 1000 square kilometres of high altitude rainforest, meandering rivers and boggy swamps, the park feeds two of the world’s largest rivers, the Congo and the Nile, and provides a significant portion of Rwanda’s fresh water.

Located a 4-5 hour drive along well-paved roads from Kigali, the park is an easy addition to any family safari. The picturesque drive, winding through terraced farms and tea plantations, provides a rare glimpse into rural Rwandan life and is a great way to witness the country’s incredible range of topography. For those tight for time, however, domestic flights to Kamembe Airport and helicopter transfers are both available.

What to do in the Nyungwe National Park?

The pristine montane rainforest of Nyungwe National Park offers a wealth of activities that cater to all ages and interests.

Chimpanzee trekking is the highlight for many visitors, providing an up-close encounter with these lively primates as they leap through the treetops. Unlike the expensive and more time-restricted gorilla treks of Volcanoes National Park – limited to an hour with the gorilla family –  chimpanzee visits offer a more flexible and affordable adventure, perfect for families.

For active families, Nyungwe boasts over 130 kilometres of hiking trails, including a trek to the summit of Bigugu Peak, the park’s highest point, or a journey tracing the Rwandan source of the Nile. The thrilling treetop canopy walk, suspended nearly 60 metres above the forest floor, is a favourite with children and teens, offering sweeping views of the rainforest and a chance to spot some of the park’s 300 bird species, including 26 endemics like the Rwenzori turaco.

Beyond the rainforest, no family safari to Rwanda would be complete without a visit to a local tea plantation. Rwanda’s temperate climate and fertile volcanic soil are perfect for growing high quality tea and as such it has become one of the country’s largest exports. A tour of Gisakura Tea Plantation demonstrates the art of picking and processing tea leaves and provides guests with samples of the locally produced tea.

For a tranquil afternoon, a visit to Isumo Falls, a striking waterfall cascading 17m down into an impressive amphitheatre, is one of our favourite ways to unwind after your chimpanzee trek

Best time to visit?

The park is open year-round, however, the drier months of June to September are the best time of year to visit for chimpanzee trekking and hiking. The drier conditions make day trips into the park more pleasant and the hiking trails less treacherous under foot.

The green season, from October to May, brings more changeable weather with heavy downpours common in the afternoon. However, these months see the arrival of many migratory bird species, offer lower rates and fewer crowds, making it a great time to visit for birders and safari-purists wanting to escape the masses.

Who should visit?

Nyungwe National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure-seeking families, offering a unique range of activities and habitats found nowhere else in East Africa.

From thrilling treetop canopy walks suspended high above the rainforest to scenic hikes through over 130 kilometers of trails, Nyungwe provides activities that appeal to all ages, making it perfect for multi-generational family holidays. Tranquil tea plantations and cascading waterfalls offer quieter moments to balance the more exhilarating activities.

Chimpanzee trekking offers families an affordable and less strenuous alternative to the better-known gorilla treks in Volcanoes National Park. This makes it particularly well-suited for families with younger children or those on a budget.

The park’s relative seclusion and limited visitor numbers ensure a more intimate and authentic safari experience, allowing families to explore this ancient montane rainforest and observe chimpanzees thriving in their natural habitat.
