Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli
Luxurious tented camp in Amboseli’s best location, looking out to Mount Kilimanjaro
Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli
Elewana Tortilis Camp occupies arguably the finest location in Amboseli and has the added benefit of being in a private conservancy, bordering the national park.
Mount Kilimanjaro is visible throughout the camp, with all rooms positioned to have expansive views of the mountain. Acacia tortilis is the latin name of the umbrella thorn tree, many of which are found in the woodland area where the property is located.
Accommodation is provided in thatch-covered tents that are spacious and well designed. Tents can all be made up as double or twin and have an ensuite bathroom and a verandah. There’s also a main lounge, bar and dining area.
Tortilis Camp is very family-friendly with a private house and family tent in an area slightly removed from the main camp. Both have exceptional views out to Mt. Kilimanjaro and share a swimming pool. Elewana, who run the property have a commitment to sustainable luxury – as such, the camp runs on 100% solar power and has received a Gold eco-rating.
The big draw in Amboseli, aside from the views of the mountain, are the famous elephants that reside here. More than 1,000 are found in the park, including some of the biggest ‘Tuskers’ on the continent. Famous wildlife photographers have stayed at Tortilis whilst travelling to Amboseli to capture elephants, as the terrain and backdrop make for spectacular pictures – look out for the signed David Yarrow print in reception, a favourite photographer of ours.
Staying here, you’ll want to spend a good amount of time in Amboseli National Park, particularly observing the elephants. It’s also worth climbing up Observation Hill to get 360 degree views of the park landscape. The benefit of staying at Tortilis means you’ll also get to explore their private conservancy and take part in bush walks with Maasai guides, as well as bush breakfasts and sundowners.
