A clean and modern city at the heart of Namibia, Windhoek is the ideal starting and end point for your luxury family safari.

Surrounded by incredible landscapes, including the rolling hills of the Khomas Hochland on one side and the vast expanse of the Namib Desert on the other, Windhoek has a frontier town feel and is the perfect spot to pick up supplies before heading out on your adventure.

The rich colonial history of Windhoek can be seen in its historic Germanic influences. Dotted around the city are old German castles as well as a neo-baroque cathedral which is worth a visit.

Where is Windhoek?

Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia, located in central Namibia in the Khomas Highland plateau area, at around 1,700 metres above sea level, almost exactly at the country’s geographical centre.

The main transport hub of Namibia, most travellers start and end their trip here and the airport is a convenient 45 minute drive from the city centre.

What to do in Windhoek?

Usually used as a jumping off point for your family safari adventure, it is easy to forget that Windhoek boasts its own range of activities.

The Parliament Gardens is a popular spot for a leisurely stroll, with its well-manicured lawns and beautiful flowers. The nearby Daan Viljoen Game Reserve is a great place to spot wildlife and enjoy hiking trails, beginning your safari adventure from the start.

Those interested in getting a taste for Namibia’s varied history must take time to visit The Independence Memorial Museum, showcasing Namibia’s struggle for independence from South Africa, and the Alte Feste Museum which provides a glimpse into Namibia’s colonial past.

Windhoek also has several markets where visitors can purchase handmade crafts and souvenirs, such as the Namibia Craft Centre and Post Street Mall.

Best time to visit?

The best time to visit Windhoek is during the dry season, which falls between May and October. This period offers mild temperatures and clear skies, making it ideal for outdoor activities and wildlife safaris.

If you prefer to avoid crowds and enjoy lower prices, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April or November, when the weather is still favourable.
