The most populated region of Namibia, the central highlands of Namibia separate the Kalahari from the dunes of the Namib.

Discover small towns with tree-lined streets and friendly locals, like Okahandja, just north of Windhoek. Renowned for its wood carving community and vibrant markets, Okahandja is a great spot for unique curios and gifts.

Explore large game farms in the area, with Okonjima standing out as a hub for cheetah and leopard rehabilitation through the AfriCat Foundation.

For a brief stopover, Frans Indongo’s farm offers a cozy retreat. Alternatively, venture to the little-known Mundulea ranch, a wilderness haven perfect for immersive walking safaris.

Where is Central Namibia?

The central Namibia region, encompassing the Khomas, Erongo and Otjozondjupa regions, stretches over the spine of Namibia.

Stretching between Windhoek and Etosha, the Central Highlands unfold as a landscape of undulating hills, home to numerous expansive farms and ranches.

In this Namibian expanse, the focal points are not the terrain itself but the inviting guest farms and cozy lodges scattered across the region. Some establishments boast private game reserves, others captivate visitors with their distinctive environments, and a few simply serve as comfortable rest stops for travelers passing through.

Although historically the name ‘Skeleton Coast’ was used to refer to the entirety of Namibia’s coastline, today it describes the 500 km expanse north of Swakopmund, and 40 km east into the arid Damaraland region.

Stretching across 16,390 km² the Skeleton Coast National Park is a vast expanse of largely untouched wilderness, and most families prefer to use Swakopmund and Walvis Bay as bases from which to explore the wider area. You can either take an internal flight from Windhoek or take the fascinating road trip through the Erongo region of Namibia.

What to do in Central Namibia?

Central Namibia offers a range of fantastic activities to kickstart or end your family safari.

Stop at Okahandja for its open markets, historical charm and reputation for biltong. To the south, Von Bach Dam’s hilly terrain supports a variety of game. Gross Barmen Hot Springs, west of Okahandja, features hot mineral springs and scenic walks.

In Omaruru, a green town with an artsy vibe, discover the gateway to the Erongo Wilderness Conservancy. Covering 2,000km², this private area showcases the Erongo Mountains and diverse ecosystems, with successful wildlife conservation efforts, including white rhinos.

For the adventurous, the Gamsberg Nature Reserve offers an opportunity to scale Namibia’s ‘Table Mountain’ or a more leisurely drive through its spectacular pass.

The Central Highlands promise a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural richness for an unforgettable Namibian experience.
