Read our advice on the best time to visit Malawi for a family safari holiday

Malawi is the envy of most safari countries

Malawi’s varied landscape means that regional variations in weather are significant, with consistently warmer temperatures on the shores of Lake Malawi and cooler nights up in the highlands.

The best time to visit Malawi is during the dry season from May to October, when the winter brings cooler temperatures between 18 and 30 degrees and consistently sunny days. The drier weather also draws wildlife in Liwonde National Park to the Shire River leading to the best game-viewing of the year.

From October, the temperatures in Malawi rise significantly and there is a greater risk of storms. However, if you are willing to put up with a few short and sharp storms this period sees the arrival of thousands of migratory birds and the birding is spectacular.

The Dry Season

May to October

The best time to visit Malawi is during the long dry season from May to October, when clear, sunny days and cooler temperatures are perfect for family beach days in Lake Malawi and offer the best game-viewing in Liwonde National Park.

The months of August and September are especially good as large herds of animals congregate around sparse water sources and the temperatures are perfect for water sports or relaxing in the sun on Lake Malawi.

The Rainy Season

November to April

From September, temperatures in Malawi begin to climb, often reaching the mid to high 30s, accompanied by an increasing likelihood of thunderstorms. Despite the heat, the spring months bring exceptional wildlife sightings. October is particularly remarkable as impressive herds of eland gather to breed, while the arrival of migratory birds creates outstanding opportunities for birdwatching.

The rainy season, from December to February, sees heavy downpours and the closure of most lodges and resorts around Lake Malawi. However, for passionate birders, this period is a hidden gem. The abundance of birdlife during the rains offers extraordinary viewing opportunities, making it an affordable and rewarding time to visit for those focused on birding.
