House in the Wild
Boutique family-run lodge by the Mara river, on a private concession
House in the Wild
Tucked away on the northern edge of the Masai Mara ecosystem, on a 1,000 acre private estate, this little gem of a lodge is the perfect place for a particularly family-friendly safari.
While this would tick all the boxes for any family, those with particularly young children will be very happy here. The swimming pool is a toddler’s delight, with a long, round shallow area in which to paddle for hours. Older children will burn off steam on the expansive lawns in front of the rooms, and enjoy spotting hippos in the river, and birds in the trees on the river banks.
The resident cats are a feature in the main area and love nothing more than a cuddle at tea time, and small resident antelope make an appearance early every morning on the front lawns.
Excellent game viewing is to be had on three of the neighbouring conservancies, and the highest hill in the Masai Mara is nearby for unforgettable sundowner views.
There is a rhino sanctuary a short drive away which makes for a fun and educational afternoon, and the Wild Hub is down the road, where one can visit the Wild Shamba (a large vegetable garden where most of the lodge’s fresh produce comes from, entirely run by women) as well as the Mara Training Centre.
As if this was not enough, bike rides and walks are possible in the immediate area, as are scenic flights (at an extra cost) over the entire Masai Mara, should you wish. The atmosphere here is laid-back and flexible, meaning you are at liberty to plan your own day, down to the very last detail. In short, you can get away from the beaten track and experience life in the Masai Mara.
The lodge is family owned and run, and it shows – the team here are welcoming, fun and excellent with children. We had a wonderful time here with our family, and can’t wait to go back!
