Where to go?
The Eastern Cape game reserves of Shamwari and Kwandwe tie in beautifully with a visit to Cape Town and the Garden Route.
Madikwe and the Waterberg are located further north, closer to Johannesburg. These two can be easily combined to offer a varied South Africa family safari holiday with contrasting wildlife and habitats.
All these areas offer accommodation ranging from luxury, family-friendly lodges to more laid back alternatives. What they all have in common is the knowledge of how to look after you and your brood, and offer engaging and enriching experiences.
What to do?
How your day looks will depend to a degree on the ages of your children. Older kids will join you on early morning and late afternoon game drives in search of the Big Five and other species. The evening might be rounded off with an open air movie night or learning about the stars.
For your fledglings who may not yet possess the attention span for a three hour game drive, they will be entertained back at the lodge. Identifying animal tracks, interactive wildlife quizzes, baking, and crafting are the order of the day.
When to travel?
You can enjoy malaria-free family safaris year round, with cooler weather typically between June and September, coinciding with European and American summer holidays.
The summer months of November to March can be hot, and wet in the north. Easter is a great time to go, especially if you also want to spend time in and around Cape Town.
