Where is the Garden Route?
The Garden Route specifically refers to a 200km stretch of coastline between Mossel Bay and Stormsrivier in South Africa’s Western Cape.
For many, it can also refer to the entirety of the coastal experience between the cities of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
It includes many points of interest for those self-driving between Cape Town and the malaria-free game reserves of the Eastern Cape.
What to do on the Garden Route?
Leaving from Cape Town, you’ll probably first stop in the coastal town of Hermanus. Between July and November, the town’s cliffs offer arguably the best land-based whale watching anywhere in the world. Nearby Gansbaai is also one of the prime locations for cage diving with great white sharks.
Hermanus’ southern right whales can also be seen along much of the coast, including from the wild, fynbos covered dunes of De Hoop nature reserve. De Hoop also offers an interesting array of wildlife. A teaser of what’s to come if you choose to end your South Africa family holiday with a safari.
Garden Route holidays simply aren’t complete without a visit to the area surrounding the coastal towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Water sports on Knysna lagoon and coastal walks around the Robberg peninsula showcase the littoral highlights. Knysna itself is a bustling town with an established cafe culture and even its own oyster festival. Children are particularly well catered for with safe beaches and innumerable activities to choose from.
Best time to visit?
The Garden Route is the classic year-round destination. The coastal waters and inland forest trails offer respite in the warmer months between November and April.
The more unsettled winter months (June – September) welcome the returning southern right whales to their breeding and calving grounds. This is also the time when many festivals, such as Knysna’s oyster festival take place.
Who should visit?
The hotels know their audience and cater to all visitors with equal care and attention.
However, the abundance of family friendly attractions make the Garden Route a firm favourite for luxury family holidays.
