The Bazaruto Archipelago, a breathtaking cluster of five palm-fringed islands off Mozambique’s coastline, is the epitome of a tropical paradise. Spanning 1,430 square kilometers of thriving coral reefs, the archipelago is one of Africa’s oldest marine reserves and a sanctuary for extraordinary biodiversity.

Renowned for world-class snorkeling and diving, its warm waters teem with life, from humpback whales, dolphins, and manta rays to the elusive dugong. With over 2,000 fish species, three types of turtles, and vibrant flocks of flamingos, it’s a haven for marine and bird enthusiasts alike. On land, samango monkeys swing through lush greenery, while crocodiles can be spotted along inland waterways.

Three of the islands have been transformed into some of Africa’s most exclusive beach retreats, offering luxurious seclusion and spacious beach villas. Easily accessible via charter flights from Johannesburg, Kruger, or Maputo, the archipelago is an ideal addition to a southern African family safari

Whether it’s relaxing on Benguerra’s soft sands or embarking on underwater adventures off Bazaruto Island, the Bazaruto Archipelago promises an unforgettable blend of natural beauty and refined luxury.

Where is the Bazaruto Archipelago?

Located just 30km off the coast of Mozambique, the Bazaruto Archipelago is an idyllic string of tropical islands in the Indian Ocean.

The archipelago comprises five main islands – Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue – surrounded by thriving coral reefs. Alongside its pristine beaches and clear turquoise waters, the islands boast striking sand dunes, freshwater lakes, and mangrove forests that protect a vast array of marine and land wildlife.

Easily accessible from Vilankulos, a mainland city with an international airport, the archipelago is a convenient destination for luxury family safaris. Visitors often arrive via chartered flights or helicopters from South Africa, Zimbabwe, or Tanzania, making it a seamless addition to a southern African adventure.

What to do in the Bazaruto Archipelago?

The towering sand dunes and marine national park of the Bazaruto Archipelago offers a wealth of unforgettable family safari experiences.

Start your adventure on Bazaruto, the largest island in the archipelago, famed for its towering sand dunes that rise up to 90 meters. Families can enjoy the thrill of sandboarding down these majestic dunes, with breathtaking views of the turquoise Indian Ocean as a backdrop.

Explore the island’s history with a visit to the 19th-century colonial lighthouse, perched at the famous Don Carlos Point, and a trip to vibrant local villages and serene coves, like Sailfish and Dolphin Bay, which offer a glimpse into traditional island life.

The warm, crystal-clear waters surrounding the archipelago are a paradise for divers and snorkelers. Discover a dazzling underwater world teeming with over 2,000 species of fish, as well as loggerhead, leatherback, and green turtles. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the elusive dugong. Between April and October, boat safaris provide opportunities to see whale sharks and humpback whales, a thrilling spectacle for all ages.

For an unforgettable family outing, saddle up at the local stables for horseback riding adventures across the islands. Traverse sandy beaches, tropical forests, and even ride through the gentle waves for a magical, immersive experience.

Best time to visit?

The best time to visit the Bazaruto Archipelago is during the long dry season from April to December, when clear, sunny days and cooler temperatures offer ideal conditions for family beach days.

The diving and snorkelling is particularly good from April to June and again from September to November when the water is calm and clear and there are fewer tourists.

Those interested in whale-spotting should visit from June to November, when humpback whales begin to arrive on Mozambique’s southern coast after an epic migration from Antarctica.

The cyclone season lasts from January to March and the archipelago is often quite hot and humid. However, if you are willing to put up with a few short and sharp storms, it is the ideal time for a quiet and more affordable family holiday on the beach.
