When is the best time to visit Zimbabwe?

Read our advice on the best time to visit Zimbabwe for a family safari holiday

Zimbabwe has something to offer all year-round

Game-viewing is at its peak between July and October when huge herds of animals gather at lakes, watering holes and rivers during the drier months. Those wanting to escape the crowds and grab themselves a deal tend to prefer the wetter months from November to March. To see Victoria Falls at its most powerful, April to June offer the best value.

June - October

The dry season

Considered the most favourable for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities in Zimbabwe. Temperatures are mild, the skies are clear and the vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot animals as they gather around water sources.

Although you need to watch out for higher prices, more tourists and colder nights. The months of September and October are especially hot and dry, which can be uncomfortable for small children and older travellers.

The wet season

Though less popular for safaris, the wet season brings it own advantages.

Lower prices and fewer crowds offer greater flexibility in booking and are perfect for those looking to get off the beaten track.

Lush vegetation, dramatic weather changes and the arrival of migratory birds means Zimbabwe becomes a paradise for snap-happy travellers and twitchers alike. Some lodges even promise 50 species before breakfast at this time of year.

The rain can sometimes interfere with game drives and other activities, and some roads and lodges may be closed due to flooding.

The end of the rains

April brings the end of the seasonal rains, and a general fresher and brighter feel is in the air.

Victoria Falls is at its fullest and most spectacular, truly earning its name of ‘The smoke that thunders’.

Mana Pools, a World Heritage national park particularly famous for its walking safaris, also reopens in April.
